“Ash before oak, in for a soak,

Oak before Ash, in for a splash!”

The above quote is a familiar country saying especially in west coast of scotland. If the Ash tree;s leaves come out before the oak tree then the summer is predicted to be a wet one. On the other hand however, if the oak tree blooms before the ash then there will only be a splash of rain during the summer. Meaning that it is going to a good one. This is another country saying which may or may not turn out to be true. But, as it happens this year the Oak’s leaves have come out before the Ash, so at last this we are due for a good summer, according to the trees anyway!

Nature is probably better at telling you what  weather to expect in the coming months than computer models. The trick is trying to pick what clues mean what! In my winter weather prediction i noted the early arrival of a bird usually found in sibera and scandinavia which signalled  a colder spell of weather than has been experienced in recent years, this was true certainly in Glasgow where a ground frost

As we in the northern hemisphere head into summer time, we often forget that the southern hemisphere is heading into winter. Last night at Charlotte’s pass in the Snowy Mountains, Australia a temperature of minus 13 celcious was recorded. This is the lowest temperature ever to be recorded in the Australian continent during the month of April. What happened to all the chat about global warming??

Some people have been asking me what kind of summer its going to be like in 2009. To be honest at the moment I haven’t a clue! Being in the city in the winter and pring means that I miss some of the tell tale signs that nature gives as to what kind of weather is on its way. There hasn’t really been a properly hot summer since 2003? So I reckon its about time we’re due a really hot summer where the temperatures in Scotland get above that 30C mark.

I’ll do some research and ask my Dad what he thinks, being a shepherd means he notices nature in more detail than a lot of people so perhaps he could shed some light on nature’s clues and help me to give my summer weather predictions 2009.
